Onboard First Aid: Immediate Actions

Parts 1 and 2 of the DVD media feature medical professionals portraying shipboard personnel as they demonstrate the immediate actions required for stabilizing the condition of an ill or injured crewmember.

Part 3 is an audio-visual test that allows the viewer to evaluate his or her understanding of the subject matter, as a means of boosting retention and measuring comprehension. Part 4 is a Workbook, which serves as a study guide that can be issued to crew personnel. Included in the Workbook are test forms that can be used for scoring and certification of those who successfully complete the program.

Onboard First Aid: Immediate Actions is targeted at entry-level personnel. It serves as a companion to the 10-title Maritime Medical Emergencies Instructional Series, intended for senior officers, which demonstrates comprehensive treatment procedures and case management strategies for the injuries and illnesses that commonly occur at sea.

The media is based on actual incidents drawn from the case files of Maritime Health Services, Inc. (MHS), a Seattle firm that has provided professional medical consultation to vessels at sea on more than 15,000 occasions.

Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping require all shipboard personnel to be capable of undertaking an effective immediate action in response to a medical emergency.

Junior officers must meet an intermediate level of emergency medical proficiency. Senior officers designated as persons in charge of onboard medical care must be proficient at advanced treatment procedures and case management strategies.

According the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Newsletter, Onboard First Aid: Immediate Actions and the companion Maritime Medical Emergencies programs are "important resources for vessel operators striving to comply with Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping requirements." Most major U.S. ship operators now utilize the videotapes, and the Maritime Administration has placed them aboard the vessels in the nation's Ready Reserve Fleet.

Photographed aboard deep-sea vessels ranging from tugs and fishing vessels to container ships and tankers, the media demonstrates professionally executed emergency medical techniques and procedures in documentary fashion, with a minimum of theory. The instructional content consists of highly realistic emergency scenarios, with extensive use of digital video effects to enhance the demonstrations of emergency medical procedures. The Workbook is comprehensively illustrated with key images excerpted from the videotapes.

Onboard First Aid: Immediate Actions also forms part of the Basic Safety Training Package, which includes companion modules titled Basic Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety & Social Responsibility, plus the Interactive Training, Drilling & Assessment Compact Disk. The Package has been designed as the most cost effective approach to meeting the Onboard Training, Drilling and Assessment Requirements established by the ISM and STCW codes. DVD-Video
